Chris Hani Month – Celebrating the Legacy
Chris Hani District Municipality, Eastern Cape – April 2012 marks the 19th anniversary of the assassination of Chris Hani and the district municipality named in his honour commemorates the man, his contribution to the liberation of all South Africans and the values he fought to instil in the culture of his people.
Born in Cofimvaba in the former Transkei on 28 June 1942, Martin Thembisile (Chris) Hani lived a life that will resound through the annals of South African history for countless future generations. During this month, communities and government celebrate this shining life of a South African liberation icon by giving resounding expression to public participation and service delivery.
This year’s celebrations will be extended to the month of May to honour unsung heroes and heroines born in the district. The main objective is to educate the youth and create awareness about the importance of the liberation heritage struggle and liberation icons. The celebrations will also serve to promote and market the CHDM Liberation Heritage Route in harmony with Centenary torch celebrations of the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) as recognised by United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.
The 27th of pril will be marked by Bathandwa Ndondo memorial lecture in Cala preceded Xalanga Water Supply project launch. The Luvuyo Lerumo memorial lecture will take place on the 28th in Lady Frere including planting of 100 trees as a symbol of 100 years celebrations of liberation struggle. The highlight of this day will be the launch of Sorghum Mill and Agnes Rest Phase 1 & 2 projects in Emalahleni Local Municipality.
Memorial lectures to take place in May include that of Molteno Massacre on the 4th marked by launching of Molteno low level bridge and Molteno oxidation ponds phase 1 projects and planting of 100 trees. The morning of 10th will be marked by Dr Xuma’s celebrations in Ngcobo. In the evening we will be observing the Walter Sisulu Memorial lecture. Vuyisile Mini’s memorial lecture will take place on the 11th in Cofimvaba together with launching the Tree Nursery project and signing of share milk agreement between Ncora Dairy beneficiaries and private partner. The handing over of the Multi purpose-centre will take place in Sabalele Chris Hani’s birthplace on the 11th and his memorial lecture thereof.
The celebrations will be ended by an exciting note with players across the district battling it out in a mayor’s cup final in Cradock 13th and James Calata celebrations. “Our past is all around. We live our lives beside a rich background formed by historic events and other physical and spiritual survivals of our past. But the historic environment is more than just a matter of material remains. It is central to how we see ourselves and to our identity as individuals and communities” says executive mayor Mxolisi Koyo. These celebrations symbolises strength and unity in the face of overwhelming opposition. It is therefore fitting that the life and legacy of South African hero Chris Hani is celebrated through the joyous expression of the culture and life he fought to protect, he added.
The Chris Hani Month events and celebrations are an initiative by the Chris Hani District Municipality. It is currently in its fourth year.
