CHDM COMMEMORATES THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER REDUCTION

Chris Hani District Municipality commemorates the annual International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness. The observation of this day is guided by the themes that the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction component publishes to be looked into each year.

The theme for this year is “Home Safe Home”. In line with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 which refers to the prevention of disasters and mitigating its effects, Chris Hani District Municipality has programs targeting communities in raising awareness at ward level in all its local municipalities.

In the previous year’s CHDM commemorated the IDDR through choral music performed by schools from the district, visual art, and drama. The performance was mainly to raise awareness about manmade or natural disasters. This year the municipality has adopted a different approach.

We identified an early childhood development centre in Middelburg, Inxuba Yethemba LM,   Masigcinane Educare Centre which had an extremely dilapidated structure, unsafe for habitation, especially by children.  The support extended to the centre includes a renovation of the structure and provision of equipment.

The centre will officially be handed over to the beneficiaries on 01st November 2017, Middelburg (Siyabulela Community Hall), Inxuba Yethemba. @10 am
