Spring Development Programme

CHDM demonstrates the beginning of water spring development work on the mountainous areas of Dr AB Xuma LM in ward 6. Spring development programme is one of the CHDM initiatives and efforts to ensure that communities have access to clean drinking water across the district.
CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Lusanda Sizani has handed over the material to work on spring water initiative in Vuyisile Mini LM, Sakhisizwe LM, Dr AB Xuma LM, Emalahleni LM and Enoch Mgijima LM.

Handover of spring construction material

Today, the handover of spring construction material and community engagement is underway at Zandiswa Kilwa Multipurpose Centre in Ward 6, Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, as Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) continues its efforts to improve access to sustainable water provision across the district.
Led by CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Lusanda Sizani, the handover will be followed by the showcasing of the water spring currently in construction.

CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Lusanda Sizani led engagement with Emalahleni LM on water and sanitation services. The municipality has identified areas that need quick interventions on both water and sanitation. CHDM technical teams are already dispatched in the affected areas in all wards. The Executive Mayor, also emphasised that spring development initiative focussing Emalahleni LM, Dr AB Xuma LM and Vuyisile Mini LM will be prioritised with more resources.

Serving Our Communities Better – COGTA

The Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is conducting a workshop at the Chris Hani District Municipality Council Chambers targeting all six local municipalities.
Led by Council Speaker Cllr Jongumzi Cengani, the workshop focused on reviewing guidelines for establishing and electing ward committees, strengthening the Integrated Public Participation Model, and tackling community challenges through its 3 Pillars: Development Planning, Social Facilitation, and Social Cohesion & Stakeholder Management.
Representatives from all local municipalities attended the workshop to take marching orders prior to the LGE 2026.

Women Empowerment Dialogue

GCIS – Eastern Cape, Government Communication and Information System in collaboration with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Chris Hani District Municipality, hosted a Women Empowerment Dialogue at Ndungwana Traditional Council, Banzi A/A, Cofimvaba.
The session, held under the national theme “Empowered Women, Empower Nations”, sought to bring government services closer to rural women and to create awareness on socio-economic opportunities, health, safety and legal support services.
The Executive Mayor of Chris Hani District Municipality, Cllr Lusanda Sizani, emphasized the DDM approach which seeks to coordinate integration in government ensuring that services rich all intended communities, driven by the needs assessments from local leaders. “The district municipality is committed to bringing services closer to rural communities, where distance and inadequate transport continue to prevent them from accessing essential services.”
Government Departments and entities including Department of Health, Agriculture, Employment and Labour, Social Development, Transport, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thuthuzela Care Centre, SAPS, CHDA, RAF, Public Works, Eskom, Walter Sisulu University, Women Cooperatives and others, provided information and on-site services.

Eastern Cape Recycling

Eastern Cape Recycling (ECR) in collaboration with Chris Hani District Municipality and MetPac-SA have officially launched the District Waste Picker Integration Programme today at the Thobi-Kula Indoor Sports Centre, Komani. The district-wide programme will benefit all six local municipalities.
The programme was launched to integrate waste pickers into municipal waste management systems in line with NEMWA safety regulations, to support with provision of PPE and ensure safety compliance, and to register waste pickers onto the central database (DFFE national waste picker registration system) which unlocks EPR service fee payments via cashless platforms and formal recognition.
As part of the launch, waste pickers received protective clothing including gloves, overalls, reflective vests, boots and masks to wear when working to ensure they work safely at landfill sites and buy-back centres.
This matters because it restores safety and dignity by reducing health risks, it formalises waste pickers by giving them access to training, tools of trade, scales, balers and enterprise support funded by MetPac-SA, and it ensures district equity so that instead of one local municipality benefiting, all 6 LMs will have linked collection points feeding into the circular economy.

Women’s Month 2026

CHDM hosted Women’s Parliament District Workshop led by Provincial Legislature. The workshop aimed at deepening programmes of women empowerment at macro and micro level. This also aprovides a platform for women to share their experiences, raise issues affecting their communities and contribute towards shaping programmes that advance the rights and wellbeing of women.
The workshop was guided by the Theme: “From the Dompass to Power” – Marching on to Sustainable Women’s Emancipation on the 70th Year of the 1956 Women’s March and the 72nd Commemoration of the 1854 Women’s Charter.

NCOP OVERSIGHT VISIT

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) is visiting Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) to follow up on recommendations made during its 2024 oversight visit.
Today’s visit focused on two key CHDM projects — the Tsomo Water Treatment Works and Tsomo Wastewater Treatment Works — to assess progress and engage all relevant stakeholders on the implementation of the 2024 Council recommendations.
Day 1, afforded all stakeholders to give account on the status quo of all projects visited in 2024 prior the outreach.
