Chris Hani District top performing schools awarded

It’s often said hard work pays off and this was the case for some schools within the Chris Hani District Municipality area of jurisdiction. The hard work and dedication of learners and teachers of the class of 2018 finally paid off as top performing schools in the district were recognised and  rewarded for their outstanding results.. Six of the top performing schools, one form each Local Municipality, were rewarded handsomely by the Chris Hani District Municipality during the Executive Mayor’s Excellence Awards which took place recently.

Freemantle Boys High School (Emalahleni LM) was ranked as the  top performing school in the district, for having achieved a 96.2% pass rate. St James High School came in the second place with 92.4 % (Intsika Yethu LM), followed by Nyanga Senior Secondary School at 90.3%(Engcobo LM), Ndlovukazi Senior Secondary School at 88.6% (Enoch Mgijima LM), JA Calata High School at 84.9% (Inxuba Yethemba LM) while AM Zantsi Senior Secondary School achieved 82.4% (Sakhisizwe LM). The support to the schools included Cheques ranging from R20,000.00 – R25,000.00, laptops and awarding of bursaries to best performing learners. The award ceremony was the culmination of the annual Back to school Programme  undertaken by CHDM in partnership with the Department of Education within the district, Local Municipalities and the Chris Hani Development Agency (CHDA). The awards were not only dedicated in recognising  stellar performance by schools  but also  in creating a platform for beneficiaries to share best experiences.

CHDM through its Development Agency prides itself in helping improve the lives of learners who come from impoverished backgrounds. This is achieved through the bursary scheme that is facilitated by the Chris Hani Development Agency. Since its inception six years ago a total of forty four academically deserving learners within the Chris Hani district have benefitted from the programme.

One of the recipients,  Cwenga Ngxangana, who recently graduated from the University of Free State  was among the Executive Mayors’ Special guests. Cwenga obtained his BCom Accounting degree in Cum Laude with a total of 18 distinctions. He gave his own testimony about the support he received from the district and how much that helped him over the years. “It has not been an easy sailing, however sleepless nights and dedication finally paid off. At the moment I  am not ready to look for any job, as my  wish is to further my  studies by embarking on a postgraduate degree. My  ultimate goal is to become a Charted Accountant and  my only prayer is to get assistance to realise my dream”, he said.

Cwenga’s plea and prayer was instantly answered as the CHDM Executive Mayor, Cllr Kholiswa Vimbayo made a commitment to award Cwenga with an additional two year bursary towards his postgraduate studies, through the Mayor’s discretionary fund. “CHDM  will continue with its support to schools in the region through this programme . We are equally concerned about those schools which did not do well this year and are aware of the  challenges faced by our schools hence we have also committed an amount of R100 000  which will be utilised to assist during the winter study camps for the matriculants. This confirms that we are united in recognising education as an apex priority for our country”, the Executive Mayor said.
