Chris Hani Initiation Indaba

*CHDM CONVENES A TWO-DAY INITIATION INDABA IN CALA*

Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) has convened an Initiation Indaba to engage with all stakeholders that have a direct interest in the matter.

The need for the Indaba was triggered by several challenges related to Customary Male Initiation that CHDM is confronted with.

The Indaba which is held under the theme “Mabaye bephila babuye bephila” is aimed to enhance accountability and early reporting by traditional surgeons and traditional nurses, strengthen bush tracking strategies, ensure allocation of adequate resources to curb fatalities and normalize equal charges (fees charged by traditional surgeons and nurses) in all local municipalities.

Mayors, Speakers, and Councilors from all CHDM local municipalities, relevant sector departments, NGOs, the Provincial and district Local House of Traditional Leaders, Traditional Councils Traditional surgeons and nurses and Local Inititation Forum have converged under one roof to collectively engage on strategies to help address challenges related to the custom.

CHDM views Inititation as a societal matter and therefore the participation of everyone involved is pivotal to address these including curbing deaths of initiates.

The district municipality has recorded zero deaths and zero amputations during the last summer and winter seasons and the Indaba will assist ensure that the status quo remains.

The Indaba is held as follows:

Date: 25-26 October
Time: 09h00
Venue: Askeaton Cala
