UPDATE KOMANI WEATER SUPPLY

CHDM Executive Mayor Cllr Lusanda Sizani addressed community members from Mlungisi in Komani today who verbally presented issues relating to water and sanitation provision.
The Executive Mayor clarified issues raised and reiterated interventions that have already been put in place to ensure continued water service in the area. These include rationing of available water supply for even distribution until the situation improves; additional water tankers that are deployed to the affected wards, with each ward allocated a dedicated truck; additional JoJo tanks currently sourced to be placed in strategic points in each ward to be easily accessible to communities; drilling of boreholes to be connected on solar windmills around Berry dam to augment raw water inflow into the dam, to be fast-tracked. Cllr Sizani further indicated that a depleted Bonkolo dam is unimaginable during rainfall season and some stakeholders have indicated interest to assist our efforts to drill these boreholes.
Works are currently underway at Xonxa dam to repair pumps and pipeline snags and this is expected to be completed by March 2025.
The district municipality has also prioritized repairs to water leaks along the Waterdown Pipeline with one major leak identified already repaired, adding a much-needed 1.8 mega litres per day of raw water inflow.
CHDM refutes claims that water distributed with water tankers is unsafe for human consumption. The Executive Mayor assures the community on the quality of water provided by the water trucks. He further emphasized that water carted to the communities is drawn from purified municipal sources and appealed to communities to be on the alert as water trucks meant to service the wards are branded. Any unmarked water trucks that communities allege to be drawing water from unpurified sources are not from CHDM.
CHDM team comprising members of the Mayoral Committee, led by the Executive Mayor undertook a walk-about in the distressed areas aimed to confirm quality of water carted to the areas, this included visits to Berry, Bonkolo and Xonxa dams.
The district municipality will continue engaging with the affected communities to provide regular updates on the matter, with another set to take place on Monday, 20th January 2025 at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Centre.
Chris Hani District Municipality is committed to ensure sustainable water service provision in the area and is working hard to ensure completion of repair works at the Xonxa pumpstation, that are currently in progress.
